| Speeding tickets are charged as "infractions". You cannot be imprisioned for an infraction and therefor the constitutional guarantees of a trial by jury have never been held to apply. Misdemeanors such as exhibition of speed, speed contest, and DUI, carry the threat of imprisonment and therefore you are entitled to a trial by jury if you so request it. Hot tip, when charged with a non-dui misdemeanor traffic citation, such as "exhibition of speed", demand a jury trial. Then after you plead not guilty and request a jury, stop by to chat with the city attorney. Offer to waive the jury and/or change your plea if they will reduce the charge to an infraction. They will almost ALWAYS take the deal. So, instead of a mega point 100+ mph ticket on your record for 7 years, (that you won't beat at trial) you take a basic speeding ticket which sticks around for a year or two and counts fewer points.
